Poll shows strong support for Progressive policy on student allowances

Reports of a nationwide poll today suggesting that nearly 75 per cent of those surveyed believe it is fair that students should receive a living allowance sends a clear signal to the next coalition government, says Progressive Party education spokesperson Megan Woods.

"Progressive agreed to disagree with Labour over the 2003 Budget decision to remove the cap on tertiary fees and we support all measures to lower tertiary fees and to improve the financial wellbeing of those in skills, training and higher education because that is in our national economic development interest," Dr Woods said.

"It makes economic sense to provide fulltime students with a living allowance, because the dividends of such a policy will flow back to the whole of society.

"And we are pleased to see our colleagues in the Green Party continue to copy our allowances and student debt repayment policies. The more the merrier," Megan Woods said.
