Preliminary results announced for 2005 GENERAL ELECTION

The preliminary results as at midnight for the 2005 General Election have been released by the Chief Electoral Office.

Voter turnout is estimated to be 80% of those enrolled as at 5pm 16 September. About 215,000 more voters turned out than in 2002. Special declaration votes to be counted (including votes coming back from overseas) are estimated at 218,000 (9.6% of total votes).

A summary of all party votes, electorate votes and advance votes are available on www.electionresults.govt.nz. The website also shows the probable distribution of seats by party as calculated by the St. Lague formula. Preliminary results by polling place for each electorate are also available on the site.

The Official Results process starts today (Sunday). All votes counted on election night will be recounted and special declaration votes will be processed and counted. The target for the release of the Official Results is 2pm on Saturday 1 October 2005.
