New Zealand should be planning to adopt a Constitution after Treaty claims are settled says Wayne Hawkins, Constitutional Affairs spokesperson for the Republic of New Zealand Party (The Republicans).

He said The Republicans accepted that settling Treaty grievances should be the first priority.

“We will establish a Ministry of Reconciliation to give priority to getting claims tabled, heard by the Tribunal and settled.”

He said that claims would be settled on a Fair and Final basis. A claim once settled would not be revisited.

“We cannot go on constantly replaying who did what to whom. It’s holding us back from developing as a nation. We need to settle Treaty grievances once and for all and move on”

Mr Hawkins said the Republicans plan is to replace the Treaty with a written Constitution which would set out everybody’s right and responsibilities.

“This will be the new founding document based on the principle of equality for all New Zealanders.”

Mr Hawkins said it would replace the mish mash of statute and common law that masquerades as our ‘constitution’.

“The principles on which we base our system of government should be clear to everybody, not a mystery understood by a few.”
