Smacking Debate to Continue at Rationalist House

Date: Sunday 23rd April Time: 7pm Location: Rationalist House, 64 Symonds Street, Auckland.
The NZ Association of Rationalists and Humanists will be holding a debate on the proposed repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act, which allows parents to use reasonable force when punishing their children.
Speaking for repeal will be Dr Ian Hassall, who is Senior Researcher in the Child and Family programme at the Institute of Public Policy at AUT University. Formerly a paediatrician, from 1989 to 1994 Dr Hassall was New Zealand's first Commissioner for Children.
Speaking against repeal will be Craig Smith, National Director of Family Integrity, an organisation opposed to unjustifiable government interference in family matters. He majored in Social Policy at Massey University, has eight children and works for the Home Education Foundation. Family Integrity's website is at: http://www.familyintegrity.org.nz/
