“Mile of Denial” Lunchtime March Today

A public march is being held today to mark the Independence Day of Aotearoa, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the 28th of October 1835.

The march highlights the denial of the human rights of Maori Indigenous Peoples by the NZ, Australian, Canadian and US governments. Each has announced they will not be supporting the Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples when it is considered by the United Nations General Assembly in the next few weeks.

‘Mile of Denial’ marchers will present the Australian High Commission, the US Embassy and the New Zealand government with copies of the 1835 Declaration of Independence, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and of the UN Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples – urging them to vote in support of the human rights of Indigenous Peoples across the globe.
