Downtown Community Ministry Jumps the Gun with Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was celebrated early in Wellington today when over 130 people gathered in the Wesley Church Hall on Taranaki St to savour a tasty lunch put on by Downtown Community Ministry.

Cooked up by Wellington chef Rowan McIntyre and his partner Dee Jamieson, DCM clients from all around Wellington and many of their mates enjoyed a very Kiwi Thanksgiving on this hot November's day.

The lunch was sponsored by the United States Embassy, and officiated by Ambassador McCormick who helped carve up one of the 12 Turkeys. The Ambassador reminded the crowd of Thanksgiving's history and the celebration of a 'bountiful harvest'.

DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre said, "The lunch was a great way to recognise some genuine Wellingtonians and offer them some festive season hospitality"

Also on the menu were peas and beans, mashed and roasted potatoes and pumpkin tarts with cream and ice cream for dessert.

Alan Norman and Dougal Spier, both from DCM, provided musical entertainment before and during the meal, keeping it a festive and lively time.

Many of those feasting on the lunch passed on their appreciation to Downtown Community Ministry staff and Ambassador McCormack as he greeted the people.
