CDF Saddened By Coup

The Auckland-based Coalition for Democracy in Fiji (CDF) has condemned the attempt by the Fiji Military Forces to intimidate the democratically elected Government in Fiji and bring about its illegal removal by the President.

CDF Chairperson Ahmed Bhamji said, "We are saddened that Fiji is yet again being subjected to an illegal and armed usurping of parliamentary democracy".

Mr Bhamji called on the Fiji military to respect the rule of law and to follow Constitutional processes to help resolve issues and disagreements.

"We call on those forces in Fiji that are undermining democracy to pull back and uphold the Constitution".

"We also commend the New Zealand Government for its efforts in attempting to facilitate dialogue between the affected parties, and suggest this is the way for the future for Fiji. We urge New Zealand to continue to facilitate this process".

The Coalition for Democracy in Fiji, a group made up of former Fiji residents, and concerned New Zealanders, has been active since 1987 in support of the fight for the rights of Fiji people and Fiji democracy.
