More Household Energy Needed

Press Release Sustainable Electricity Association New Zealand

4 February 2007

SEANZ: Climate Change Solutions Requires More Household Energy

“Householders, small businesses and corporations can help the world with their own generation contributions to mitigate the climate change problem” said Dr Tony Bittar, chairman of the Sustainable Electricity Association. Dr Bittar was responding to the alarming conclusions in the new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“New Zealand needs to move faster in implementing support measures that will help these sectors dramatically reduce their own climate change impacts through renewable small-scale electricity generation and energy efficiency” said Dr Bittar.

“The new IPCC report will accelerate the growing political and business momentum for better climate change action legislation and support, but I think the Government has underestimated the desire of people to help do the right thing. We need more rapid action from Government and officials on concrete measures to make small scale generation a reality” said Dr Bittar.

The Sustainable Electricity Association New Zealand (seanz.org.nz) is the industry body promoting small-scale wind, solar, and hydro electricity generation. SEANZ aims to play an increasingly important role in reversing the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

“The IPCC has again underscored the seriousness of the climate challenge and the likely consequences of failing to address this global threat. But they also highlight that there is no bigger and better tool in our toolbox than renewable energy” concluded Dr Bittar.
