Jigsaw Shocked By Christian Schools Attitude Towards Corporal Punishment

Tau Huirama, Jigsaw CEO Strategic Relations is shocked to read reports that schools are still imposing corporal punishment, with approval of parents.

This follows recent reports on Wainuiomata Christian College’s attitudes to corporal punishment.

Mr Huirama strongly disagrees with Wainuiomata Christian Colleges principal Martin Keast’s beliefs on corporal punishment in schools.

‘Mr Keast believes prohibition on corporal punishment was a ‘rotten law’ because it infringed parent’s rights. This is wrong. No one - parents or schools have the right to use corporal punishment on children’

Mr Huirama was also shocked to hear Mr Keast say ‘that is none of your business’ when asked if his school used corporal punishment.

‘Corporal punishment or any abuse on children is everyone’s business. Parent’s, teachers and the rest of the community all need to work together to keep our children safe. We need to keep them safe at home and in their community. If we do this, they will grow up happy and achieve their potential.’
