Repeal of DPEP Act
Repeal of DPEP Act
The Bill to Repeal the Disabled Persons Employment Promotion Act passed its second reading last thursday and is now in committee stages.
Abilities Incorporated supports the intent of the Repeal, however the effects of increased wages on invalids benefits, sickness benefits, accommodation allowances and other entitlements for the disabled have not been adequately researched, nor has the necessary additional funding been provided to ensure sheltered workshops can continue to offer jobs to people with disabilities.
The DPEP Act should not be repealed until these issues are resolved and increased transition time is granted to ensure the workshop can cope with changes brought about by the Repeal and choice of work is available to more people with disabilities.
Abilities is very concerned that the practical arrangements for transition to paying individually assessed wages in sheltered workshops are completely inadequate.
