International Women’s Day: A Chance to Tidy Our Own Backyards
The International Coalition for Women in Shooting and Hunting (WiSH) has used Women’s Day 2007 to urge local action on international humanitarian issues.
WiSH Chair, Dr Samara McPhedran said “On Women’s Day, our thoughts often turn to developing nations, where problems like malnutrition, lack of healthcare, and civil strife prevail. The suffering that occurs when humanitarian aid is not forthcoming should trouble each and every one of us.”
“At the same time, we cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that many well-off countries have ‘failed states’ within them, where global issues are reflected domestically.”
WiSH highlighted as priorities for action the elevated risk among Indigenous women of experiencing intimate partner violence, reduced life expectancy against national standards, and poor access to education and essential services.
Dr McPhedran added that “Ultimately, Women’s Day should also be about celebration. Fortunately, around the world, we can celebrate the difference women can make in their own backyards as well as internationally!”
