FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Radical Youth calls for action against Subway

Radical Youth calls for everyone to boycott Subway restaurants, in response to the company sacking Jackie Lang, a Dunedin Subway worker for sharing a cup of Coke with a friend, during her lunch break. To make matters worse the company then called the Police and Ms Lang was arrested and kept in a police cell for two hours for the 'theft' of the drink. She is now facing criminal charges.

"This is a shocking example of a multinational corporation bullying a poor worker for no reason" said Eliana Darroch of Radical Youth.

"If the charges against Ms Lang aren't dropped Radical Youth will organise actions against Subway" Ms Darroch added

Criticism shouldn't just be reserved for Subway. The Police must be criticised for laying charges against Ms Lang.

"The NZ Police regularly claim their resources are over stretched yet they've pursued a trifling case against a poor worker".

On May Day Radical Youth relaunched its campaign against youth rates. Subway is one of the companies that shamefully still pays 16 and 17 year olds less than workers aged 18 and over for the same work.

"Subway's continued use of youth rates and its treatment of Jackie Lang clearly shows it is a company that holds its workers in contempt" added Ms Darroch.
