Michael Peak Station Purchase Welcomed
Michael Peak Station Purchase Welcomed
The StopTenureReview Group welcomes today’s announcement by Lands Minister, David Parker of the Crown’s purchase of lessee grazing rights on Michael Peak Station in Central Otago.
The tussock grasslands and shrublands of Michael Peak deserve protection. Tenure review was unlikely to have achieved this or provided adequate public access for recreation.
“Crown purchase is the model we recommend. Combined with better Crown oversight of pastoral leases, it could be a sound alternative to tenure review. If done carefully and justly, it could deliver much more to the public.”
