14 June 2007
For
immediate release
On 15 June, cleaners will be taking action together on 6 continents in 20 countries in 40 cities around the world.
International Justice for Cleaners Day is a chance to publicly recognise the hard and often undervalued work cleaners do.
It is also a chance to celebrate cleaners as individuals, members of communities, mothers, fathers, aunties, uncles, and grandparents.
International Justice for Cleaners Day is also a chance to highlight the problems facing cleaners worldwide.
Cleaners in Auckland and Wellington will be holding rallies and marches at midday on Friday June 15 and will be handing out the yearly Golden Toilet Brush Award.
The Clean Start: Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign handed out the first award last year to to building owners who condoned poor treatment for cleaners and insufficient time to clean properly.
This year the Golden Toilet Brush Award is being handed to the multinational cleaning firm considered by cleaners to be the worst employer in the New Zealand cleaning industry.
In Auckland, cleaners will
gather at the foot of Queen St at midday.
In Wellington,
cleaners will gather at Parliament at
midday.
