Unions Mark Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday
The Council of Trade Unions is marking the birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi with a screening in Wellington tonight of the recent documentary Burma’s Secret War.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was democratically elected as Prime Minister of Burma in the early 1990s but remains under house arrest. Her home detention was recently extended for a further year by the military dictatorship.
"Burma is the forgotten country and the atrocities committed there daily by the military dictatorship are often ignored internationally. The CTU will continue to support our sister organisation the Federation of Trade Unions of Burma in their work with others in the human rights movement to end the brutal military dictatorship and restore democracy to Burma,” said CTU secretary Carol Beaumont.
The CTU has hosted interns from Burma in recent years, and current intern Toe Toe will open the screening tonight.
