HWE Mining lockout starts wave of strikes nationwide
A decision by Solid Energy contractor HWE Mining to lockout more than 200 coal miners at the Rotowaro mine has sparked a wave of strikes at Solid Energy mines nationwide.
Coal miners at Solid Energy’s Huntly East, Spring Creek, Terrace and New Vale mines have all walked off the job demanding HWE Mining ends the lockout and comes to a settlement.
EPMU National Secretary Andrew Little says HWE Mining’s employer militancy will not be tolerated.
“HWE’s decision to lock out its workers is a totally unreasonable reaction to what was relatively minor industrial action. Now these guys can’t get back to work and earn their wages until the company lets them.
“This wave of strikes is a clear message to HWE that our members are serious about reaching a fair deal and will stand together against this kind of employer militancy.
“HWE should withdraw its lockout immediately and come back to the table so we can work out a deal, as we already have with Solid Energy and other contractors.”
HWE Mining is owned by Australian mining giant Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd.
Meanwhile, miners at Solid Energy's Stockton mine are continuing with an overtime ban against mining contractor Doug Hood Ltd, which is also refusing to settle.
