NEWS RELEASE
New Zealand Red Cross
in Top 20 for International Donations
The old notion
that New Zealanders are a generous lot has been reaffirmed
in figures released by the International Committee of the
Red Cross (ICRC) recently. New Zealand Red Cross is in the
top 20 of the 185 national Red Cross societies in the world
for public donations.
New Zealand Red Cross has been ranked 13th on the donor list behind leader British Red Cross, but ahead of National Societies such as France, China, Hong Kong and Belgium.
New Zealand Red Cross operations manager Andrew McKie says the generosity of National Societies is measured in terms of cash and in services offered, such as the deployment of aid workers.
In the past financial year New Zealand Red Cross contributed NZD$1.3 million to ICRC field operations and deployed 30 aid workers to assist with ICRC missions around the world.
Mr McKie says the fact that New Zealand Red Cross ranks so highly on an international scale is very impressive and is thanks in the most part to the generosity of New Zealanders.
“On an international scale New Zealand is highly respected within the international Red Cross Movement and is recognised as being very generous, while the caliber of our aid workers in the field is held in high regard,” says Mr McKie.
Funding from the New Zealand public in the past financial year has helped the ICRC with their international programmes in Pakistan following the 2005 earthquake, and in Iraq and Sudan.
Mr McKie says the money donated from New Zealanders makes a real difference to the lives of those vulnerable people overseas affected by disaster and conflict.
New Zealand Red Cross’ international aid worker programme is funded by donations from the public plus funding from the government’s aid agency NZAID.
