Commissioner applauds peace initiative
Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres acknowledged Waitakere Council for its city for peace initiative.
Waitakere city mayor Bob Harvey presented the declaration at a civic ceremony to celebrate United Nations International Day of Peace today.
The City for Peace Declaration sets out 13 principles concerning human rights, tolerance and non violence aimed at fostering a culture of peace for Waitakere residents.
“The Peace Declaration shows the way Waitakere city has taken leadership on human rights issues,” said Commissioner de Bres.
He urged other councils to consider the benefits of adopting a peace initiative.
The City for
Peace Declaration has been installed in the Waitakere
city
council chambers alongside the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights and the Treaty of Waitangi.
