Former Student President Banned from Victoria
University
Today former President of the Victoria
University Students’ Association and Workers’ Party
Wellington mayoral candidate Nick Kelly has been issued a 2
year
ban from Victoria University. The ban comes in
response to Nick attending a
protest at Victoria
University opposing increases to student fees.
“I have been banned from all Victoria University grounds for 2 years because I attended a small peaceful protest opposing fee increases” says Nick Kelly.
By contrast students who attended the same protest have only been excluded from the University’s administration building (The Hunter Building) until Monday 15 October 2007.
“Victoria University is a public education provider which the working class majority have paid for and built” says Nick.
“It is outrageous that as a member of the public and former VUWSA president that I’m banned from Victoria University for expressing my opposition to yet another attack on students through fee increases. This is yet another example of capitalist university elitism”.
Nick intends to defy this
draconian Trespass notice issued by Victoria
University.
“If elected mayor of Wellington I could face
a $1000 fine or 3 months in jail for attending the opening
of the new university hostel” says Nick, “this notice is
clearly ridiculous and I have no intention of obeying
it”.
