Progressive Announces Decision To Stop Selling Fireworks

Progressive Enterprises has today announced its decision to stop the sale of fireworks in its Foodtown, Countdown and Woolworths stores.

Progressive Enterprises Managing Director, Peter Smith said today, “We support the safe use of fireworks in the community but unfortunately even with the latest restrictions on age and the reduced selling period, children and animals continue to be injured and distressed. We believe the safety risks associated with the private use of fireworks outweigh the benefits.

Progressive supermarkets will not sell fireworks next year, however we will look at other opportunities for families to enjoy Guy Fawkes night through sponsored events. In the interests of families in New Zealand, we strongly feel that this is the right thing to do.”

Progressive fully supports organised and supervised firework events and would be happy to consider the sponsorship of large controlled public displays which are managed in accordance with emergency services guidelines and supervised by registered safety officers.

Bob Kerridge, CEO of the SPCA fully backed the decision, “It is fantastic to see such a large and well-respected organisation taking a stand. The initiative is fully in line with the message that the SPCA has been advocating for many years, that of a total ban on the public sale of fireworks.”
