Support for Government Announcement

Media Release for immediate use 13 February 2008

Support for Government Announcement

An organisation which operates child abuse-prevention services for high-risk families in Christchurch is giving the government the thumbs-up for a new funding announcement.

The Family Help Trust is referring to the Pathways to Partnership - increased investment in government and community partnerships, in order to jointly improve the lives of individuals faced with multiple adversity, including parenting programmes.

Family Help Trust chairperson Annabel Taylor says "Our Trust works with families/whanau to enhance the wellbeing of children through supporting parents to make changes in their lives.

"We support the notion of working together with other agencies to achieve the best for our clients.

"Our Trust has an established record of maintaining research and evaluation on our effectiveness and we hope funds for this important area are also dedicated in the new funding."

BACKGROUND

Family Help Trust early-intervention services are intensive, long-term, family-based and child-focused. They target high-risk parents with multiple-problem histories who have young families, and aim to break the cycles of inter-generational dysfunction.

We want not only to stop the patterns of anti-social behaviours and family functioning difficulties, but also to provide families with the support and skills needed to avoid the traps of violence, crime, and substance use.
