700 Children A Day Eat A Red Cross Breakfast
Over 700 children a day are taking the opportunity to fuel their brains and fill their tummies with a healthy nutritious breakfast through the Red Cross Breakfast in Schools programme.
All decile one primary schools in New Zealand are eligible to offer the breakfast programme to their pupils. There are currently 24 primary schools offering the free breakfast programme which consists of wheat biscuit cereal, toast and a hot drink served at the school by volunteers.
“We know that there are many reasons why children turn up to school hungry. We also know that children who eat breakfast have a better chance of fulfilling their educational potential. New Zealand Red Cross’ aim is to help improve the lives of vulnerable people and clearly there are many children who can benefit from our assistance,” says Patrick Cummings, Breakfast in Schools National Manager.
The Red Cross Breakfast in Schools programme started in May last year and is supported by Countdown Supermarkets.
