Bailey Kurariki and Reducing Crime
Vision Network national director Glyn Carpenter says media reports on Bailey Kurariki highlight the need to think carefully about treatment of prisoners after their release.
"If our goal really is to reduce crime and the resulting trauma on victims, we should realise that hounding prisoners after release is more likely to achieve the opposite result".
"Justice requires fair treatment for both victims and offenders. This requires care for victims and their rights to be upheld. But it also requires space for offenders to re-integrate and become productive members of society".
Creating new injustices can never create a safer, more just society.
