Pro-choice response to abortion ruling misleading

PRESS RELEASE
A press release from Family Life International, New Zealand

Wednesday 11.06.08

Pro-choice response to High Court abortion ruling is dangerously misleading

Family Life International is concerned by the alarmist misinformation that is being promoted by various abortion supporting groups and individuals in response to Justice Millar’s High Court ruling about the legality of abortion in NZ.

The indication being given by these individuals and groups is that the current abortion laws in New Zealand advantage women, are not being flouted and do not need any change.

Our crisis-pregnancy and post-abortion counselling team regularly see the harm that abortion is doing to the lives of many New Zealand women, and we hear firsthand the misinformation that women are given by abortion clinics and counsellors in New Zealand.

We have yet to meet any woman who has had all of the research-verified physical and psychological risks of abortion explained to her properly, and we have dealt with very few women who have been given accurate information about the foetal development of the baby in the womb by abortion counsellors and clinics in New Zealand.

Many abortion counsellors are still telling women that a routine pregnancy carries more risk than an abortion does, which is a completely false assertion that is refuted by large volume of reliable research.

On top of this, the majority of the women we are helping have been coerced by husbands, boyfriends, partners or other family members who threaten to leave them, or stop financially supporting them if they do not have abortions.

New Zealand abortion does not protect women; it simply leaves them vulnerable to misinformation, coercion and a lack of informed consent when it comes to abortion.

This situation will only be remedied when abortion providers are required by law to give all of the facts to New Zealand women about the very real physical and emotional risks of abortion, and full and frank information about the foetal development of the baby in the womb.
