Anniversary Of The Death Of Sir Edmund Hillary

This Sunday the 11th of January marks the first anniversary of the death of Sir Edmund Hillary. His life and death will be remembered at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral, the place of his State Funeral.

It is a custom to mark the first anniversary of the death of people whose funerals are held at the Cathedral. Sir Edmund’s name will be read out as part of the prayers of the church on Sunday morning. Sir Edmund’s Garter Banner from St George’s Chapel Windsor, Windsor Castle, is now hanging in St Mary’s Church.

The banner is an ongoing reminder of Sir Edmund’s achievements and also of his funeral which was held in St Mary’s says the Cathedral Dean, The Very Rev’d Ross Bay. People continue to visit St Mary’s in order to see the banner and to reflect on Sir Edmund’s life.

Last January, prior to the State Funeral, thousands of people queued for hours at the Cathedral to pay tribute to Sir Edmund. They reflected his contribution to our country and across the world. We continue in particular to hold Sir Edmund’s family in our prayers as they mourn the loss of a loved family member, says Dean Bay.
