Europe Day Celebrated in Wellington
Royalty was on display for Europe Day at the New Zealand National Portrait Gallery in Wellington on 12th May. Under the gaze of an exhibition of Kings and Queens, a capacity gathering of Government Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Ministry officials and other guests heard Charge d'Affaires a.i. George Cunningham extol the EU-New Zealand relationship, welcoming in particular Foreign Minister Hon. Murray McCully's visit to Brussels next week for his first EU-New Zealand Troika Ministerial. He also underlined EU-New Zealand cooperation in such areas as the Pacific, trade relations, science and technology and education.
In response, Hon. Georgina te Heuheu, representing the Government, emphasised the natural partnership that exists between the EU and New Zealand. She affirmed the breadth of the relationship and stressed the importance of New Zealanders having ease of access while travelling in Europe. In addition to the areas of cooperation listed by Mr Cunningham, she mentioned in particular our joint inter-faith and inter-cultural media awareness programme in the region and New Zealanders' involvement in EUPOL in Afghanistan.
