The Law Commission
The Law Commission review of the liquor laws has failed to ‘grasp the nettle’ and recommend a ban on alcohol advertising, sponsorship and other promotions, said Dr Viola Palmer of the Group Against Liquor Advertising (GALA).
This is an important and effective step in curtailing alcohol abuse, especially youth binge drinking.
It is no coincidence that youth drinking has increased so much. The young generation have been exposed all their lives to messages that drinking leads to fun and success.
After a fulsome report on the harmful social and health effects of alcohol, the Commission does not appear to have made the connection that advertising is an underlying driving force. They show a good understanding of the methods of advertising using new technologies like the internet, yet make no recommendations to curb it.
The Commission queries the effectiveness of an advertising ban. The liquor industry has no doubt about the effectiveness of a ban. It is one of their top concerns, as revealed in research by Professor Daube from Perth. A recent article in the ‘Lancet’ medical journal which reviewed the literature found a significant correlation between the amount of advertising and the harm from alcohol.
There is still much work to be done with the Law Commission and GALA looks forward to the opportunities for public input.
