PRESS RELEASE – for immediate use

18 September 2009

RISE Youth Grants Programme

RISE up, take a stand, make a difference – apply now!

Young people understand the challenges that face other young people better than anyone else.

The RISE programme supports youth led projects that help to reduce stigma and discrimination and promote good mental health and wellbeing to other young people.

RISE gives New Zealanders up to 20 years of age the opportunity to get creative, develop and carry out a great project idea and above all do something positive for their peers. Grants of up to $1000 are offered for individuals and up to $5000 for groups. Although projects are youth led, adult mentors support grant recipients through the process of applying and carrying out their project.

Projects so far have included putting on a concert, painting a mural or creating a CD. Projects can focus on positive body image, give a voice to struggles and provide alcohol free events - anything which spreads a positive message about what it means to have good mental health and wellbeing.

RISE was launched in 2009 and there was an overwhelming response to the first round of grants earlier in the year. Successful applicants came from all over New Zealand and projects have been really well received and supported by communities and schools. Projects included an art exhibition portraying a hopeful journey, a love your body carnival, a radio advert and a concert among others.

The deadline for this grants round is 28 October 2009. Visit www.rise.org.nz for all you need to know about the RISE programme.
