The ‘C’ Word

Cycling has been a recurring topic in New Zealand news of late from unfortunate tragedies to the way we’re approaching safety on the shared road.

Wellington riders, with Cycle Aware Wellington (CAW) at the forefront, are taking two wheeled transportation to the Great Harbour Way this Saturday morning, 24 October, to promote a number of worthwhile causes; the necessity for more cycle lanes on our roads to enhance safety for riders and a separate space from motorists; the 350 climate change movement, promoting cycling as a low carbon form of transportation; and the simple fact that cycling is free, fun and fast.

A ferry will take more than 50 cyclists of all ages and levels across the Wellington harbour at 9.30am to Days Bay where the ride will begin. After a basic maintenance workshop and safety tips pedals will turn and tires will spin following the beautiful coastal road into Wellington City. Petone and Hutt City residents have the option of meeting up with the cycle train at the westernmost pull-off on the Esplanade where the pack will slow down and converge with the new wheels.

Motorists coming into Wellington are asked to please be aware of cyclists on the road as the existing cycle lane is often strewn with glass and other puncturable particles making the shoulder of the State Highway the more consistent option. Some of the road connecting Hutt City to Wellington does not have a cycle way, forcing those on two wheels to merge with cars going 100km per hour.

Many motorists who also own a bicycle say they would like to commute using active, healthy transportation but the lack of a safe route, with the only cycle lane almost guaranteeing a side of the road tire fix-up, impedes their choice.

The Saturday ride will also pick up riders at Ngauranga, on the old Hutt Road, and Wellington Railway Station before culminating at the International Day of Climate Action Festival that the 350 movement is organising at Odlin’s Plaza, outside Mac’s Brewery, on Wellington’s stunning waterfront.

350 is a global movement uniting voices calling for bold action on climate change. Over 4000 actions are registered in 169 countries for the 24th October. Photographs are being compiled of every action and used as political proof that people want world leaders to impose a strong, global treaty on climate protection at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) this December in Copenhagen, Denmark.
