Voices of Kiwi youth to set sail at march in Copenhagen

What: A large demonstration for a strong deal on climate change in Copenhagen featuring the New Zealand Youth Delegation holding a large Team New Zealand Spinnaker which carries the voices of Kiwi youth

When: 1pm to 5pm, Saturday 12 December

Where: Assembling Christiansborg Slotsplads, then following the rough schedule of:

2pm - Leave Christiansborg Slotsplads
2.15pm - Christiansborg Torv
3pm - Frankrigsgade Kirke
4pm - Sundby Idraetsplads
5pm - Arrival at Bella Center

A large Team New Zealand sail featuring the written messages of young Kiwis for world leaders discussing climate change in Copenhagen will be carried by the New Zealand Youth Delegation (NZYD) in a massive demonstration tomorrow. The March for Climate Justice is planned to be the largest demonstration by far during the conference, and will call for strong action on climate change from the UN COP15 negotiations currently taking place.

"The ten metre by six metre spinnaker kindly gifted to us by Team New Zealand carries the voices of hundreds of young Kiwis from all over the country, which we have proudly taken with us to Copenhagen," says Zachary Dorner, a 20 year old NZYD delegate from Wellington.

"It will be a great visual symbol to stamp our voice on the negotiations and signify the urgent need for an agreement."

“It's important to show the world that the New Zealand public supports much deeper cuts to New Zealand's emissions than the Government is proposing. The emission's reduction target should be in line with the 40% by 2020 we believe is necessary to avert dangerous climate change.”

“We just hope John Key listens to us, listens to the science, listens to the economics, listens to the rest of the world and changes our position to 40% by 2020. The current highly conditional 10-20% target is simply not good enough.”

“It's not too late, but the clock is almost at midnight.”

The march will assemble in Christiansborg Slotsplads at 1pm, leaving at 2pm to arrive at the Bella Centre by 5pm.
