Transmission Gully applauded, long overdue
Transmission Gully Decision applauded but long overdue.
15 December, 2009
Kiwi Party leader Larry Baldock welcomed the announcement today by the Minister of Transport that Transmission Gully would finally get the go ahead. For many years it has been the only logical solution to the Capital City’s access problems.
“The Hon Peter Dunne can be deservedly pleased to see the project he has campaigned for finally becoming a reality,” said Mr Baldock.
“Unfortunately the pleasure of the announcement is somewhat diminished by the realisation of how long it can take in this country to fix a problem.”
“Even now we hear that there is a political party that opposes the building of the road, claiming it is not necessary, no doubt because their vision of transportation sees everyone out of their cars and onto bikes along the narrow state highway coastal entry to the capital.”
“What extra costs must now be borne by the taxpayer because of the years and years of delays? Millions have been spent on reports, consultations and discussion documents. Now finally it will be built but at a greatly increased cost over what it could have been built for had there been more decisive leadership shown by local and central governments in the past.”
Mr Baldock said, “our road network in this country is vital to a healthy economy and each improvement will ultimately give a return on investment that will benefit generations to come.”
