Climate Camp challenges Transpower: Plug us in!

In a bid to push awareness of green energy initiatives, activists at Aotearoa's inaugural Camp for Climate Action have issued a challenge to Transpower requesting connection of their solar panels to the National grid.

“New Zealand needs to increase it's commitment to renewable energy, and climate camp wish to be part of the solution.”, says climate camp participant Gary Cranston.

“The solar panels we have on site are generating more than enough electricity to support the climate camp community, and have surplus energy left over.”

The day to day running of the camp is set up to be as self-sustaining as possible, using environmentally friendly technologies like solar power, composting toilets, recycling and grey water systems.

The camp aims to test ideas about how New Zealanders might live in a carbon neutral future, as well as forming the foundations for a strong climate justice movement in Aotearoa.

Climate Camp is in the process of setting up it's own wind turbine, which will increase climate camp's energy capacity further.

“We are a self sustaining community, and now have excess energy that can be used to lessen New Zealand's reliance on fossil fuels.” says Climate Camp participant Gary Cranston.
