Maori flag group celebrate
Maori flag group Te Ata Tino Toa are celebrating that 'it's official!' - and call on all people in Aotearoa to celebrate tino rangatiratanga this weekend.
The group made the 2007 application to have the flag flown from the harbour bridge. In 2010, Te Ata Tino Toa still has hopes to see the flag flying in new places:
- it has asked the Wellington 7s to fly the Maori flag, starting at the 7s march Thursday until the end of the tournament (which coincides with Waitangi Day).
- it notes that the flag is now mainstream, it's even for sale at the $2 shop.
- it crosses its fingers that other groups see beyond the 1970s mindset, like in Manukau which will not be flying the Maori flag, which goes against tikanga Maori and government policy.
Te Ata Tino Toa is confident that the flag has the support of the rangatahi, and foresee a time when it will be accepted universally, as the Koori flag is in Australia.
