Mayors Agree With Creech Findings
Mayors Agree With Creech Findings
Canterbury Mayors
say the Government's review of Environment
Canterbury
(ECan) fairly addresses the concerns they have
about the performance of
the regional council.
In
a statement today the Mayors broadly agree with the
direction on the
report prepared by the review committee
chaired by former Member of
Parliament Wyatt Creech
The
Mayors want the Government to take immediate steps to
address the
serious issues that are raised in the report,
and to implement its
recommendations. "As we have
outlined in the Canterbury Water
Management Strategy,
careful management of the environment and progress
in the
efficient protection, allocation and management of
Canterbury's
water resource is essential for the future
growth and prosperity of the
province," the Mayors
say.
The Mayors believe that any intervention by the
Government must be
consistent with the direction of the
Canterbury Water Management
Strategy.
The Mayors also
emphasised that their full Councils would need
the
opportunity for input to the long term management of
water in the
Canterbury
province.
