Tribunal hears oral traditions in Te Rohe Pōtae District Inquiry WAI 898

The Waitangi Tribunal will commence its inquiry into the claims of the Te Rohe Pōtae district with a hui at Te Kotahitanga Marae, Otorohanga next week.

This hui is the first of a series of five two-day ‘ngā kōroro tūku iho’ hui to hear oral traditions from hapū and iwi groups from across the King Country region. These will be held on marae throughout the region between March and May 2010.

As this is a public meeting, all are welcome to attend.

Each of the five hui will bring together the tangata whenua of a particular part of the district to present oral traditions which have been passed down about tribal identity, relations to the land and historical events.

The hui at Te Kotahitanga Marae will draw together hapū and iwi from the northern part of the Tribunal’s Te Rohe Pōtae inquiry district. It will begin with a pōwhiri at 5.00pm on Sunday 28 February 2010. The hearing of oral traditions will commence at 8.30am on Monday 1 March and finish on Tuesday 2 March 2010.
The Te Rohe Pōtae District Inquiry, presided over by Judge David Ambler, encompasses around 250 claims. Among others, it involves claimants from Ngāti Maniapoto, Raukawa, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Whanganui groups, Ngāti Hikairo, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Mahanga and Tainui Awhiro.

The Tribunal Panel hearing the claims consists of Judge Ambler, Sir Hirini Mead, John Baird, Dr Robyn Anderson and Dr Aroha Harris.
