Light Up The Country This Earth Hour, Say Libz
Libertarianz leader Richard McGrath today encouraged all New Zealanders to turn on all their lights during Earth Hour this Saturday night.
“The Dark Ages were a grim chapter in human history. I don’t feel the need to relive those times, as many in the Green movement suggest we should.”
“Why not celebrate the flowering of ideas that occurred in the Enlightenment that followed the Dark Ages? Why not light up the country, and the world, to celebrate the wonderful breakthroughs in ideas and technology made possible when people are allowed some measure of freedom?”
“The pinnacle of human achievement, free market capitalism, has allowed people to follow their dreams, encouraging entrepreneurs and indirectly benefiting everyone else.”
“This Saturday evening I will be turning on every light in the house, and lighting a bonfire outside, in memory of the industrialists, scientists and economists who made possible all the luxuries we take for granted today – the computer, television, motor vehicles, comfortable housing – and the electric light.”
“We are not trapped in North Korea, a slave pen where the people are blanketed in darkness once the sun goes down. This is New Zealand, one of the freest places on the planet.”
Dr McGrath described extreme environmentalism as a “death cult”, and the suggestion that we all sit shivering in darkness this Saturday night as absurd and irrational.
“This will be a moment to pause and give silent thanks to those who made possible the comfortable existence enjoyed by most New Zealanders every day.”
“The purpose of life is to seek happiness, not deprive ourselves and others of the chance to pursue it. Let’s celebrate the achievements of our predecessors, and the freedom that made these achievements possible.”
“Let the light of human liberty shine forth!”
