Flaxmere Protest on Corrections Site

Flaxmere Protest on Corrections Site

At a large and lively meeting organised by the Flaxmere Planning Committee last night the overwhelming majority decided that a public demonstration and protest is the first cause of action against the proposed site of the Probation Service Centre in Swansea Road. At least 200 people were in attendance—Corrections were not invited to this meeting as previous efforts to reason with them had proved fruitless. Mayor Lawrence Yule was in full support of a Probation Centre NOT being situated at all in the Shopping area of Flaxmere. Councillors Henare O’Keefe and Keriana Poulain were also present and fully supportive of saying “Absolutely NOT” to Corrections.

The protest and demonstration will take place on the proposed Corrections site in Swansea Road, Flaxmere, this Friday 23 April at two different times to cater for residents on shift work. The first demonstration will take place at 10:00 am, and the second will take place at 4:00 pm. Overwhelming support to protest was given and different groups and individuals freely came forward to offer their help. This protest is the first in a list of actions the meeting agreed to take.

Also made clear at the meeting was the fact that the general public are not against having a Probation Service Centre in or around Flaxmere—but certainly Not in the Village area which is a Commercial area set aside for a makeover with the proposed Town Centre Urban Design.
