New Era – Moving Forward

New Era – Moving Forward

The predictable outcry from the Animal Health Board and TB Free Committee, regarding Westland District decision opposing 1080 poison is quite ironic. Not very long ago both organisations were downplaying the role of 1080 in their overall bovine Tuberculosis strategy.

Now you would think the sky has fallen in & every animal is going to be struck down with tuberculosis - that our exports will collapse.

This should be looked upon as the golden opportunity it is to devise a strategy which will protect our environment- at the same time ensure that farms remain tuberculosis free. Contrary to popular belief Westland District particularly south of Hokitika has a very low incidence of tuberculosis infections despite the current small hiccup at Whataroa – because of this & a decision by the Westland District Council and its ratepayer s to be 1080 free, there has never been a more opportune time for everyone to work together for a common goal.

The Westland District, given the will by all parties could become a leader in the field of TB eradication & possum control without 1080 - a vanguard for other districts to emulate.

The Westland District Council has shown visionary leadership in its decision. It is up to the Animal Health Board, TB Free, Federated Farmers, the West Coast Regional Council & the Department of Conservation to listen & work with all concerned to help develop a program we all can live with – if they have the courage.

We will have to live without 1080 sooner rather than later as the writing is on the wall throughout this Country. Isn’t it far better to be proactive - look to the future - devise strategies now, rather than burying our heads in the sand & screaming that we can’t live without this poison – our export markets have dictated no 1080 to bee keepers, no 1080 to forest exports, no 1080 for possum pet meat, no 1080 to wild venison exports – how long do you think they will pretend not to notice our meat & milk products are equally likely to be targeted for residue?
