Cancel Top Public Health Position, Say Libz

Libertarianz leader Richard McGrath suggested abolishing the director-general position at the Ministry of Health, in the wake of a struggle to find suitable applicants for the post.

“This would save taxpayers over half a million dollars, and trim one job from the bloated public service,” he said.

“The Libertarianz Party support deregulation of the health sector – handing over control of the health dollar to consumers themselves, instead of having the ticket clipped by bureaucrats along the way.”

“Libertarianz suggest the health ministry itself be abolished, with public hospitals sold off to the communities they serve and money earmarked for health spending allocated to medical savings accounts for each New Zealander.”

“This would permit full privatisation over five years, as people become accustomed to choosing personalised health insurance plans and covering significant proportions of the cost of health care from their own pockets.”

“Such a move would incentivise people to work hard and accumulate wealth, rather than using the government to socialise costs.”

Dr McGrath said the current system takes no heed of individual property rights, and will become unsustainable as population demographics change over time.
