Taranaki Whanui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika mourn passing of great Maori leader
Wellington Maori are tonight mourning the death of highly respected Maori leader Sir Archie Taiaroa. Sir Archie died at Waikato Hospital this evening after a short illness. He was 73.
Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust Chairman, Sir Ngatata Love, said the significant contributions made by Sir Archie Taiaroa over many decades will be remembered and acknowledged for many years to come.
Sir Ngatata said he will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
“He contributed across all sectors of the community including iwi, hapu, political, commercial and the private sector.
“His dignity, wisdom and guidance were appreciated by all who came into contact with him,” he said.
Sir Ngatata said Sir Archie’s leadership on matters of national significance to Maori will be particularly missed.
“To his whanau I offer my sincere condolences at this sad time.”
