GOPIO New Zealand Condemns Henry’s Remarks
GOPIO New
Zealand strongly condemns the recent racial remarks by Paul
Henry of TVNZ made towards our Governor General and the Head
of Delhi State. Paul Henry has deliberately and repeatedly
belittled Indians and leaders of the Indian community in the
past on more than one occasion. Whereas our condemnation is
not just confined to these recent incidents, we stand
strongly against any form of racial discrimination against
any ethnic community by any individual or
organisation.
Freedom of speech brings with it enormous amount of social responsibility. The racial slur by Paul Henry clearly exhibits his professional irresponsibility and also brings to light the incompetence of TVNZ Management in handling their response to this mass outcry.
Mass media has a very constructive role in our emerging multi-ethnic social and cultural makeup to create understanding and harmony amongst people of different cultures who now proudly call New Zealand their 'home'. It is sad that a few individuals could make such a dent in this process of ethnic coexistence.
GOPIO New Zealand will oppose any efforts made by TVNZ to give Paul Henry his job back as it will clearly demonstrate that TVNZ is neither following their charter nor is sensitive towards the strong feelings of the ethnic groups on such matters.
