Simon Power - ethics re: Law & Media

Simon Power - ethics re: Law & Media

We note that Justice Minister Simon Power issued the following statement yesterday, which stated that the Government is looking into regulating bloggers, Twitter, Facebook and other internet-based publishing to protect the integrity of the justice system.:

Is Minister Power trying to protect the justice system we used to have before he started ignorning the judiciary when making important decisions, or the justice system we now have, where executive decisions made by the likes of Minister Power can result in the indefinite trial by media of NZ citizens, with no right of recourse, without criminal charges being laid?

Having inflicted such an outcome on Allan and Jean Hubbard, we are incensed to learn that Minister Power is now trying to stifle any dissent about the Government's actions, by using prejudice as a justification. Given that Minister Power has overseen the situation where Allan and Jean Hubbard have suffered overwhelming abuse and criticism as a result of continuously negative press statements made about them by the Government and it's various agencies over the last 4 months, with no legal recourse for them due to no formal criminal charges being laid against them, we can only conclude that Minister Power is attempting to move us toward a dictatorship where he has complete impunity regardless of his actions.

Take a look at the following examples of the consequences of Simon Power's actions for Allan and Jean Hubbard over the last few months, and ask yourself if Simon Power had any regard for the integrity of the justice system whatsoever when he allowed the following to occur - on his watch:

The following article was written by Bernard Hickey and published by the New Zealand Herald, demanding that Allan Hubbard apologise to the whole of New Zealand, despite no formal criminal charges being laid against him:

The following link is to a Facebook page, of which John Key and Bill English are 'friends'. This Facebook page has appeared in the last three months, since the media trial of Allan and Jean Hubbard began, conducted by Minister Power and his colleagues. We do not know who is responsible for this page, but it is illegal and highly offensive and defamatory to Allan Hubbard, his wife, myself and others.......all supported by John Key and Bill English. This page did not exist prior to 20th June 2010, when Minister Power started the witch hunt against Allan Hubbard - in the media.

The following link is to a well known blog written by a financial commentator, who saw fit to list the 'crimes Allan Hubbard could be suspected of' - as a result of the speculation caused by the Government's various press statements about Allan Hubbard over the last four months.

The following blog contains numerous articles with highly defamatory and insulting claims made about Allan Hubbard, myself and his other supporters, and goes as far as actually accusing him of crimes, and stating that he has committed these crimes as if it were a fact.

The following blog is frankly so disgusting that it speaks for itself:

From this, we can only assume that either a) Minister Power has now seen the light and wishes to protect the integrity of the justice system, and to protect people like Allan Hubbard from suffering the kind of prejudice created by the Government's appalling handling of his case, or b) that Minister Power wants to continue telling the Chief Justice to "butt out of the political process" and to indemnify himself from any criticism for his refusal to allow any judicial input into important decisions he makes which adversely affect the lives of other people.
