UPDATE 11AM 15 MARCH
The New Zealand Fire Service USAR team arrives about now (midday) in the northern Japanese coastal area where many thousands of people are missing after Friday’s tsunami. The New Zealand team is part of an international group of rescuers, including a team of 72 Australians who have been tasked by the Japanese government to work in this area.
The New Zealand team is made up of 46 USAR personnel supported by an additional five Defence staff and an MFAT representative (total 52).
The bulk of the New Zealand team arrived in Tokyo last night and are now on their way to the area along with the Australian taskforce.
They are expected to arrive at about 8am Japan time (midday NZ) and begin their search operation in the town Minami Sanriku soon after.
