Strong Support For A Queen St Pedestrian
Zone
Almost two thirds (64%) of Aucklanders support some form of pedestrianisation for Queen St, according to a poll released today by UMR Research. Of the n=323 Aucklanders surveyed:
-33% want Queen St closed to all traffic and made into a pedestrian mall.
-31% prefer a ‘shared zone’, where only vehicles with business in the local area (e.g. those making deliveries) have access.
-32% want to keep Queen St as it is.
Support for changing Queen St is solid across all demographics, including area of residence, gender and income, although it is stronger amongst 45-59 year olds (72% want some change) and over 60 year olds (69% want change) than amongst under 30 year olds (56% want change).
The questions were asked as part of UMR Research’s February nationwide online omnibus, which is a nationally representative sample of n=1000 New Zealanders aged 18 or over, of whom n=323 were in Auckland. Fieldwork was conducted from 9th to 16th February 2011. The margin of error for the sample of n=323 for a 50% figure at the ‘95% confidence level’ is ±5.5%.
