Poll Shows National Unscathed After Zero Budget
ONE NEWS COLMAR BRUNTON SHOWS NATIONAL UNSCATHED AFTER
ZERO BUDGET
+ NO BOUNCE FOR BRASH
Sunday 29TH May, 2011
Despite a tough Budget and a volatile political environment National could still govern alone with more than 50% support according to the latest ONE News Colmar Brunton Poll.
National has lost two percentage points after cutting Kiwi Saver and Working for Families in the 2011 Budget but at 52% it is still 18 points ahead of Labour, which remains on 34%.
The poll of 1018 eligible voters, taken between May 21 and May 25, also shows that Don Brash’s take over of the ACT party has failed to give his party a significant boost, with ACT scoring just 2.5% on the party vote.
Political Editor Guyon Espiner says the poll is effectively, “a thumbs-up” for National’s Budget.
“National has dropped just two points – and none of that went to Labour, so despite the changes to popular schemes like Kiwi Saver and Working for Families, they have not been punished by voters,” he says.
Espiner also points to a big rebound in economic confidence as evidence that the Budget has been positively received.
“Optimism about the economy has gone up ten points and pessimism has fallen 12 points so despite doubts about the Budget forecasts for strong growth, voters do seem more confident about the economy.”
