The arms-length relationship with the government of the day is seen to be one of the strengths of the RBNZ and it has been internationally applauded for it.
In a change of policy direction in the 1980s, the RBNZ focussed strongly on the causes of inflation, the damage that it does and how it might be alleviated. But how well did it steer this country through the crisis of 2008?
