Urewera charges are rubbish
Urewera charges are rubbish
"The new indictment presented by the Crown in the Urewera case is utterly unsubstantiated by any credible evidence. The Crown did not bring the 'criminal group' charges until more than a year after the original arrests on 15 October 2007, and after the preliminary depositions hearing in September 2008 so they did not even have to make a prima facie case (a case on the face of it)" said Valerie Morse.
"Law Commissioner Warren Young said in 2008 that the accused had expressed various threats in 'extravagant and vague language' including a desire to launch a bus onto George W Bush's head."
"The remaining four people facing charges want suppression orders to remain in order to preserve their fair trial rights. The crown talks about wanting informed public debate but what they actually want is to conduct a trial by media and assassinate the character of the accused just as they did when the initial terrorism allegations were pending."
"The charges are rubbish. The case is rubbish, and has been since October 15th 2007. The charges should be dropped now. Already 14 of the people involved in the case have had their charges dropped and the rest need to go. The continuation of the case is simply a way for the police to save face after their botched operation."
