New Zealand Fire Service Media release 7 November
2011
From: Mike Hall, Chief
Executive/National Commander
The Fire Service responded to slightly fewer fire-related incidents on 5 November this year than last year.
Firefighters were still busier in comparison to other Saturday nights but for a Guy Fawkes nights, the workload was manageable. Firefighters in Dunedin were the busiest - called to a series of rubbish and couch fires thought to be set by students. During the evening 18 incidents logged, but more than double were actually attended to, as crews went from one fire to the next before returning to their stations.
Nationally, there were 267 fire-related incidents on Saturday 5 November and 143 on Sunday. Auckland had 72 fire-related incidents.
During the rest of the year, the New Zealand Fire Service responds to around 100 and 150 fire-related incidents on an average day.
