In an internet posting today Dr Peter Cleave, Mana candidate for Rangitikei, responded to comments made by Ian McKelvie, National and Josie Pagani, Labour as reported in the Manawatu Standard of 7.11.11. McKelvie argued that the policy of his own party on the Emissions Trading Scheme was ‘a big con.’ Pagani responded to that by saying that National was depending on the tax raised by ETS and there would be a big hole in the government budget if it were taken away.
Dr Cleave responded with several questions.
‘Who is a big con?’ asked Dr Cleave, ’Standing for a party with policies that you don’t believe in is just conning yourself. Sooner or later that will catch up with you.’ ‘Does McKelvie have a cavalier attitude to pollution?’ asked Dr Cleave.
‘How does McKelvie propose to deal with emissions? Will he simply pretend that they don’t exist and hope they will go away? McKelvie says he does not necessarily accept the science behind climate change. What does this mean? Does it give him an excuse to reject anti-pollution policies in this way?’
