Wellington Global Day of Action in support of Occupy Wall St

Wellington to take part in Global Day of Action in support of Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wellington will demonstrate a novel form of communication in Midland Park at lunchtime today as an act of solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

The “human microphone”, widely used in the Occupy movement, is a public address technique in which the speaker’s words are amplified by the voices of surrounding members.

Occupy Wellington supporter Tali Williams says “the technique arose out of the ban on amplification in Zucotti park in the early days of Occupy and has come to symbolise the movement.”

“Today we’re going to use the human microphone to provide a public update about the situation in Wall St” says Williams.

This event is part of an international day of action marking the two-month anniversary of the Wall Street occupation, and to raise awareness about its violent eviction this week, resulting in more than 200 arrests.

The NYPD have been accused of imposing a “media blackout” during the eviction, even closing airspace to prevent press helicopters documenting events. At least ten journalists were arrested, including TVNZ freelance videographer Doug Higginbotham.

"There has been a string of violent evictions around the world visited on Occupations but the Wall St eviction is particularly poignant, as the birthplace of the movement.” Williams says.

“Our action today is not only a statement in support of Occupy Wall Street but also of more than 2,000 Occupations worldwide inspired by it"

Occupy Wall Street are considering their options for re-occupying, and today have a day of action planned that will include occupying the subways, Foley Square and the New York Stock Exchange.
